How We Create and Maintain Sustainable Logistics

Logistics is one of those industries that faces an evergreen dichotomy. Not only are there the challenges of increasing demand from customers that are opting for specific products, while businesses navigate changing buying habits, but there also exists underlying regulatory and governmental pressure to adhere to evolving new environmental standards and regulations.

The long and the short of it is that logistics providers have to essentially keep on track of their workloads while minimising their environmental impact, wherever possible. As far as storage, transportation, and management go, the choices are somewhat limited.

However, that doesn’t change the fact that we at Momentous understand that sustainable logistics is a responsibility we must adopt as a logistics partner to environmentally-conscious businesses and individuals. In truth, our own high standards of environmental stewardship run deep within our company, with this trait being a core element of our business philosophy and values.

As specialists in fine art logistics, FF&E (Fixtures, Fittings & Equipment) transportation, storage, transport, and complex project management, we recognise that our day-to-day operations and top-level activities have an environmental footprint. As such, we have implemented strategies to minimise our impact while preserving the exceptional standards of service that our customers have come to expect over the years.

What Does Sustainable Logistics Look Like?

When we discuss sustainable logistics, we’re talking about practices and processes that reduce environmental damage throughout the supply chain without operational productivity being affected. This encompasses everything from transportation methods and vehicle types to packaging materials and warehouse heating, ventilation and air conditioning, to name just a few.

For us, the practice of sustainable logistics presents a unique challenge that we embrace. As legislation and sector regulations continue to evolve, we use these as benchmarks on how we can be a trusted, reliable and environmentally conscious partner to clients that crave transparency, authenticity, and responsibility.

Momentous’ Sustainable Initiatives and Practices

Sustainable Packaging Materials

One of the most fervent issues when considering environmental emissions is the choice of packaging materials used in logistics. While logistics companies have traditionally relied heavily on single-use materials, industry leaders and policymakers have implemented a widespread refocus on material choices in recent years.

At Momentous, we are proud to use biodegradable, recyclable, and reusable alternatives to single-use plastics in shipping and deliveries. We use acid-free tissue and glassine from sustainable sources when needed, use recycled cushioning materials and even design custom packaging solutions that minimise material usage and waste. Where applicable, we reuse crates and containers for fine art to ensure every possible storage unit is preserved.

Euro 6 Compliant Vehicles

The Euro 6 emissions standards for petrol and diesel vehicles, implemented by the EU, are designed to ensure that vehicle manufacturers keep emissions below specific limits. Vehicles that are deemed to be Euro 6 compliant must meet criteria pertaining to nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and particulate matter.

With more Clean Air Zones (CAZs) and Low Emission Zones (LEZs) being rolled out across the UK, this was an incentive for Momentous to invest in our transportation vehicles to ensure they meet Euro 6 standards.

All of our vehicles now contain advanced emission control and fuel efficiency technologies that dramatically reduce our footprint while providing adequate climate control required for specific types of logistics.

PlanetMark Certification

We’re proud to be a PlanetMark certified business, which recognises that we are committed to continuous improvement in net zero performance and targets. In short, this certification achievement requires us to have our annual carbon footprint measured, clear achievements on emission reduction targets, and regular engagement and reporting on sustainability initiatives and objectives.

Environmentally Friendly Storage

Our storage facilities contain energy-reducing and centralised climate control systems, giving us complete oversight of facility emissions, temperature and conditions. We have implemented LED lighting throughout our facilities in favour of traditional lights, optimised our insulation to keep premises warmer during the winter and cooler during the summer, and opted for renewable energy sourcing where possible.

These measures ensure our fine art and FF&E storage maintains pristine conditions while minimising our reliance on grid energy and controlling our emissions carefully.

Why Opt for Sustainable Logistics?

At Momentous, we believe environmental responsibility goes hand-in-hand with operational success.

The more fuel-efficient vehicles we can get on the road, and the lower amounts of waste generated, can directly correlate to tangible cost savings, not just for ourselves but for clients as well. Our flexible and transparent approach ensures we remain prepared for any new developments that emerge as regulations and policies continue to evolve sector- and country-wide.

With many of our clients, including museums, galleries, and public sector businesses, increasingly focusing on sustainability initiatives of their own, it’s in our best interests to preserve the excellent relationships we have built, along with those that we will continue to work hard to build. If our clients expect a firm commitment to sustainability, then we want to back that up with hard evidence, not just espouse empty buzzwords.

We firmly believe that sustainable logistics is never a one-and-done project; it’s not a tick-box exercise or an arbitrary proclamation that is made to satisfy the interests of your audience. Rather, it’s an ongoing journey that has to exist organically from the very top of every organisation and permeate throughout the business. This is why we’re continuously evaluating our performance, processes and practices and exploring new ways to reduce our carbon footprint while keeping our meticulous standards of service high.
